As personal data protection becomes a global focus, governments around the world are working on enacting legislation to keep up with the fast pace of change, as the endless march of technology and an increasingly connected world has made protecting personal data more important than ever. The EU’s recent implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is just the latest development in this crucial area of law. Outside the EU, there is little uniformity in how different regions and countries protect personal data. This guide is intended to help make sense of a complicated and ever-changing landscape.
The guide is organized in a straightforward format consisting of 11 key questions and answers for each region, covering the definition of personal information, the key principles relating to personal information protection, the compliance requirements for the collection, processing, use and disclosure of personal information, restrictions on cross-border transfer of personal information, as well as the responsible regulatory authorities, the penalties, liabilities or remedies, and new legislation regarding personal information protection. The guide serves as a convenient and practical starting point for businesses everywhere to understand a vitally important subject.
